Netherlands World Center of Nigerian E-Mail Swindle

Yvette Schoenmakers, a criminologist at the police academy, has concluded that the Netherlands, and in particular Amsterdam, serve as the world center for Nigerian e-mail swindlers. These criminals send thousands of e-mails all over the world promising people lottery prizes or other fraudulent transactions. If someone accepts he has to pay transaction costs after which he never hears anything further. The swindlers have chosen Amsterdam because they think the police there are soft and also because there is a large African community in the southeastern section of town where they can disappear.
