Dutch Police Afraid of French-type Disturbances

A psychologist, an advocate and a former police chief told the Telegraaf daily that the soft attitude of the Dutch police toward Moroccan “hooligan scum” and the denial of these problems results from shame for the lack of their own authority and fear of escalation toward the type of disturbances which erupted in France. They said this in reaction to the statements of the police chief Jan Stikvoort, who is in charge of the central Holland police region. Stikvoort had criticized the politicians and the media for exaggerating the problems in the town of Gouda and claimed that his policemen have more problems with autochtonous youngsters than with Moroccan hooligans.
