The United Nations Human
Rights Council has criticized the Dutch asylum policy because it deviates from
international agreements about human rights. The Dutch government should stop
its practice of detaining illegal immigrants if they don’t leave the country
voluntarily. Also, children of asylum seekers should be granted more rights.
The Dutch Minister of the Interior Liesbeth Spies reacted that asylum seekers are
also responsible for their children. She added that detention of illegal
immigrants is only applied in extreme cases.
