Hans Blom, a historian who headed
the Dutch Institute for War Documentation (NIOD) said that it was an illusion
that the Dutch soldiers in Srebrenica could have counted on air support in 1995
from NATO. When the Dutch soldiers fled, Bosnian Serbs
conquered the enclave and afterward murdered 8,000 Muslims. Blom said that the
Netherlands could have known that the promises of the UN were not very firm. He
said, “In UN circles, where the French and the British dominated, there was an enormous
reluctance to use the air force, and that is an understatement.”
