The Ruwaard van Putten
Hospital in Spijkenisse has closed its cardiology department in view of the
high number of deaths in 2010. The Inspectorate of Health has told 4
cardiologists to stop working immediately while 51 files of dead patients are
investigated. The Inspectorate says that the department was an acute and
serious danger to patient safety. The Inspectorate had been informed of
misconduct in the hospital long ago, but it did not act. The Federation of
Dutch Patients said that it is unacceptable that no information has been given
earlier about the poor quality of the care. It added “Had there been openness
about the quality and the number of deaths, patients would have avoided the
hospital.”
