Dutch Soldiers in Afghanistan Broke Geneva Convention

In his new book, journalist Joeri Boom claims that Dutch soldiers in the Uruzgan province in Afghanistan broke the rules of combat during wartime by entering a hospital armed with weapons. A few days after a Dutch soldier was killed by a rocket attack on their base, Dutch soldiers besieged a hospital because they believed that some of the Taliban behind the attack were wounded and in the hospital. The Dutch Ministry of Defense says that indeed entering with weapons into a hospital is a war crime but the Dutch soldiers went into the hospital to ensure that the hospital personnel were not taken hostage by the Taliban. The head of the UN mission in Uruzgan said that the Dutch behavior was a clear breach of the Geneva Convention.
