Police Annoyed About Fining for Small Offenses

Gerrit van de Kamp, chairman of the police trade union ACP has said that policemen are annoyed about the obligation to fine people for small offenses. He added that policemen miss their preventive work and the freedom to take decisions themselves. He was reacting to a study by the Jansen and Janssen firm which found that in the past two years, a 100,000 fines had been given to people who were not carrying any valid identity document. Forty thousand of these had committed no other offense. Since 1 January 2005 everybody over the age of 14 has to show valid proof of identity if the police request it.
