Parliament Requests that Government Deal with 1,000 War Criminals Residing in The Netherlands

The Dutch Parliament has requested that the Government propose how to deal with the estimated 1,000 foreign war criminals residing in The Netherlands. These people originate mainly from Afghanistan but also from the Congo, Ruanda, Iraq, and the former Yugoslavia. The problem has been acknowledged since 1997, when the daily Trouw and the weekly Vrij Nederland wrote that many Afghan war criminals had fled to The Netherlands. Later Dutch Afghanis reported they had seen their torturers in the country. Since the problem was identified only four cases have been brought to court.
