Government Announces Stronger Measures against Adoption Abuse

Minister of Justice Ernst Hirsch Ballin (Christian Democrats) has announced that the government will exercise sharper controls on the adoption of children from abroad, in order to reduce the chance of abuse. The radio program Netwerk has found that Indian parents have not always given up their children voluntarily for adoption in The Netherlands. The former national ombudsman Marten Oosting stated that the ministry has not exercised efficient control. He expressed his concern about a court investigation in Chennai in India regarding a possibly abducted Indian boy who has been living in the Netherlands as an adopted child for several years.
