A Dutch advisory referendum voted down the EU’s free trade
deal with the Ukraine. Only 38% of the
voters supported the agreement. This was
the first people’s referendum since a new law came into force which allowed 300,000
signatures to trigger a national non-binding vote. The Dutch government is greatly embarrassed
by the voting as it is currently the president of the EU. It may have to decide not to ratify the
association agreement.
