From a Wikileaks document, it emerges that in 2009 a high Dutch official (Richard van Zwol) working at the ministry of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende (Christian Democrat), had a conversation in Brussels with U.S. Ambassador to NATO Ivo Daalder. In it, he advised the ambassador to pressure Dutch Deputy Prime Minister Wouter Bos (Labor) to agree with the prolongation of the Dutch military mission in Afghanistan. The official said that the ambassador should explain to him that such an agreement would be good for Bos’ international career.
