High Level of Criminality Among Young Non-Western Immigrants in Rotterdam

Almost 55 percent of all youngsters of Moroccans origin in Rotterdam aged 18-24 have been involved with the police due to being suspected of criminal activity. The percentage for youngsters in the same age group from the Dutch Antilles and Surinam the percentage is 40%; for those of Turkish origin it is 36% and for authochtonous people it is 18%. This was announced by the criminologist Prof. Frank Bovenkerk on the occasion of his retirement from Utrecht University. He added that previous statistics always underestimated the level of criminality. Ninety percent of youngsters of Moroccan descent who commit crime are repeaters. For authochtonous criminals the rate is 60%.
