Five-fold Increase in Poppy Cultivation in Dutch-Controlled Area of Afghanistan


Since the arrival of the Dutch military in the south Afghan province of Uruzgan, the cultivation of poppies has increased five-fold to 10,000 hectares. UN data show that while one of the main goals of the international ISAF military mission is to reduce poppy growing, in the Dutch-controlled area this is not the case.
