After Girl’s Death Dutch Ban Magic Mushrooms

The Dutch government has banned the sale of fresh hallucinogenic mushrooms. In March 2008 a French girl jumped to her death from one of Amsterdam’s canal bridges after taking them. The dried variety is already illegal. Shop owners claim the ban will lead to the loss of hundreds of jobs. The Amsterdam municipal council backs the ban. One city councilor is quoted as saying: “Despite Amsterdam having the world’s most important collection of Rembrandts and Van Goghs and being home to the famous Concertgebouw Orchestra, the city is still perceived as a place where you go to buy drugs.”
