In each of the past six years the number
of suicides in the Netherlands has increased. In 2013 1854 people committed suicide
according to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). The CBS supposes that this
development is linked to the economic crisis. Also at the beginning of the
1980s when the economic situation was difficult there was an increase in suicides
in the Netherlands. It are nowadays mainly people between 40 and 65 who commit suicide.
Seven out of ten people who commit suicide are male.
