Jews, including those who were in
hiding during the war, or returned from concentration camps, were taxed and
fined for long-lease payments during the Second World War when they returned.
This often concerned Jews whose homes had been expropriated for use by Germans
and Nazi collaborators. Documents related to this issue have come into the
hands of students when they were digitalized before the originals were
destroyed.
Amsterdam’s conduct in this
issue was far more severe than other municipalities.
