Commission: Dutch Tolerance of Soft Drugs Unsustainable

A commission headed by Wim van de Donk, chairman of the Scientific Council for Government Policy, has concluded that the current policy on soft drugs in the Netherlands is unsustainable. The shops which sell these drugs are often owned by criminals and public health is in danger because the amount of active ingredient in marijuana and hashish has increased. The “coffee shops” which sell them should only supply local users and not become major distributors for drug tourists. In October 2008 the border towns of Roosendaal and Bergen op Zoom decided to close down all “coffee shops” in view of the major problems caused by Belgian and French drug tourists.
