Calculations of the NIVEL Institute show that in the past
three years about three thousand patients in hospitals have died due to medical
mistakes. Yet, only 1214 cases were reported to health care inspectors. The
main victims are people over sixty-five years old and babies. The inspectorate says
that with one exception hospitals systematically underreport deaths due to
medical mistakes. Teaching hospitals do not perform better than other
hospitals.
