President of Supreme Court: Politicians Should Respect Judges

Geert Corstens, the president of the Supreme Court, has called on politicians to show respect for the role of the judge. He pleaded for this because trust in judges has declined in recent years. There is more and more public criticism by politicians on judgments but they should at least show respect in the way the express their opinions. Corstens added that the fact that the media give short and sharp summaries of verdicts also means that the public does not accept them without criticism.

Former Teacher: Students’ Terror Led to Closure of Gouda School

After nine years a former teacher has disclosed that his school in the troubled town of Gouda was closed because of terror. Even now the teacher has requested to remain anonymous. Students of Delta College, on the way to school, had been forced by other students to give up money and other belongings, there was drug trade during breaks and the home of the school director was marked with graffiti of swastikas and Stars of David. Within the school wallets were stolen, students returned to class after breaks with goods which had probably been stolen from shops in the neighborhood. As a result, neighborhood shops refused to allow students into the stores. The social services always protected these criminal students who were mainly of Moroccan descent. Retired teachers left the town. There was no one willing to report on these crimes at the time. The school was finally closed in the year 2000.

Intelligence Service Can View Text Messages Illegally

The General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) and the police are able to view text messages illegally. The Supervisory Commission of the Intelligence and Security Service (CITV) objects to this because the Ministry of the Interior has not given permission for this. The AIVD and police are allowed to ask for traffic information via mobile phone, but two of the cellular providers are unable to separate traffic data from content.

Criticism of Liberal Leader for Allowing Holocaust Denial

Mark Rutte, the leader of the Liberal Party (VVD), has come out in favor of legislation to extend the laws of freedom of speech. According to Rutte, in this framework denying the Holocaust would not be punishable. Former VVD leader Hans Wiegel has called this proposal bizarre. Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen (Christian Democrats) called this statement an absolute “low” and said the man (Rutte) has “lost his way.” The leader of the Labor Party Wouter Bos said “I heard Rutte on TV saying that one can call out ‘Hamas, Hamas, Jews to the gas’ in a demonstration, but not in a mosque.”
