The Dutch construction firm Ballast Nedam has paid more than
450 million dollars in bribes to the Saudi royal family. The criminal investigation
by police detectives was hindered by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its
intervention led to the cancellation of the investigation of a Saudi witness ‘because
of the bi-lateral relations, the status of those involved, and the possible
