A parliamentary inquiry led by Madeleine van Toorenburg
(CDA) has published a damning report on the failure of the high speed train
from Amsterdam to Brussels. It mentions
that the main bodies responsible for the failure are the Dutch State Railways
(NS) and the various government members at the Ministries of Transport and
later Infrastructure and Environment.
The commission concluded that the interests of the traveler were
secondary to other issues. The state was
mainly interested in financial gain, the NS wanted to maintain its monopoly on
the railways. The report is entitled: “Traveler
in the Cold”. The report also says that
the government negotiated far from intelligently in its dealings with Belgium,
and that the Belgium and its railways have not acted as reliable partners.
