Labor Member: Proposed Government Resembles Fascists or Nazis

Geke van Velzen, a Labor Party member of the municipal council of Amsterdam has compared the proposed government of liberals (VVD) and Christian Democrats (CDA), with outside support of the Freedom Party (PVV), to fascists or Nazis. She called it a ‘brown’ cabinet. Already earlier Evelien van Roemburg of the Green Left party had called the proposed cabinet a ‘brown’ one. Van Velzen was a personal assistant of former Labor Party Leader Wouter Bos. She was heavily criticized by the leader of the Christian Democrats in the Amsterdam municipal council Maurice Limmen.

Leading Church Official: Foreign Minister Political Prostitute

Klaas van der Kamp, the secretary general of the Council of Churches (Raad van Kerken), has accused Maxime Verhagen, leader of the Christian Democrats and minister of Foreign Affairs, of committing political prostitution. Van der Kamp did so at the Church Day of the province of Zeeland. He says that the proposed cabinet of the Christian Democrats (CDA) and the liberals (VVD) – with outside support of the Freedom party (PVV) – focuses on earning money at the expense of human values. The Council of Chuches groups a number of denominations among which the two largest, the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant Church Netherlands. (PKN)

Amsterdam: Police Passive about 65% of Citizen Complaints

The Amsterdam police undertake no investigations into 65% of the complaints of citizens. The municipality answered this to questions of Municipal Council Member Laurens Ivens of the Socialist Party. The police claims that the figure gives a wrong impression as for thefts the percentage not dealt with is 94% while for physical abuse it is 30%. The Amsterdam police is short of 135 detectives.

Indonesian Ambassador Attacks PVV Voters.

In an interview with Het Financieel Dagblad the Indonesian ambassador to the Netherlands said that if the PVV will be a member of the new Dutch government he doubted that the Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhyono would maintain his announced visit to the Netherlands in October. He remarked that the president could not come to a country if in its government somebody calls Islam backward. He added: ‘I do not want my president to be presented here as a clown.’ He observed also: ‘Perhaps those who vote for Wilders suffer from a psychosis.’ The ambassador was called to the Dutch ministry of foreign affairs and apologized thereafter.

European Court: Netherlands is in Breach of European Convention of Human Rights

The European court in Strasbourg has decided that the power of the prosecution in the Netherlands to undertake house searches is too wide as there is almost no control by an independent judge. In this way the Netherlands is in breach of the European convention of human rights. The case in question, which dates from 2002, concerns a Dutch publishing house Sanome.

Muslim Fundamentalists Get Subsidy from Government

The annual report of the General Intelligence Service (AIVD) says that Salafist Muslims have a large network of travelling preachers who give courses throughout the Netherlands to youngsters or operate local centers. They obtain subsidies of local and national authorities for helping with homework, cultural and sport event, or social help. Member of Parliament Coskun Coruz (Christian Democrat) says that these practices have been going on despite Parliamentary complaints. The Christian Democrats and the Liberals and Freedom Party want municipalities to do their utmost to stop these practices.

After Afghanistan: Army Needs 2 Years to become Operational Again

Lieutenant General, Rob Bertholee, commander of the Dutch field army, said that in the coming two years his forces’ capability to operate will be limited. After its mission in Afghanistan much equipment returned damaged, some training activities were neglected and units were fragmented. In addition there is a large financial deficit. ‘The reset’ of the forces is complicated due to the lack of financial means.
