Minister of Defence: no place for Salafists in Dutch Army

Dutch Minister of Defense, Jeanine Hennis, has said that the Dutch army is no place for people with radical views.  This includes Salafists.  If a soldier becomes a Salafist during his army service, he is to be discharged from the army.  Her statement came following many parliamentary questions concerning the Dutch sergeant who had joined the Islamic State.  Hennis, however, opposed the PVV’s view which would prevent all Muslims from joining the Dutch army. She said, “Muslim soldiers are also willing to lay down their lives in extreme cases for the freedom of all Dutch citizens, including adherents of the PVV”.

Leading Expert Heads of Police Should be Fired

Professor Cyrille Fijnaut, a leading Dutch criminologist, has said that those who conceived and implemented the re-organisation of the National Police are incompetent and should be fired.  He added: “why would the people who came up with the wrong plans and then executed them inadequately not be replaced?  Is it possible that they would excel in the future in activities where so far they have obviously proved unsuccessful?”  Former chief commissioner of the Amsterdam police, Joop van Riessen, reserves his criticism for Minister of Security and Justice, Ard van der Steur .  He says those mainly responsible for the problems in the national police are politicians.  He added “the Minister wants to deflect attention away from his own failures.”

Expert expresses doubts about Government Institute study on carcinogenic product

In 1986, the National Institute for Public Health and Environment RIVM did study of PX-10, a product used in the Dutch army to clean weapons.  The product contains benzene, a carcinogenic chemical.  RIVM concluded that the risk to the soldiers of contracting leukemia from use of PX-10 was minimal.   Professor Jan Tytgat, an expert on the subject who teaches toxicology at Leuwen Catholic University in Belgium, says that this study should be redone, as the RIVM focused too much on statistics instead of reviewing individual cases.

Thousands of illegal migrants registered under false identities

In 2007 there was a general amnesty for illegal residents in the Netherlands.  28,000 people who were living illegally in the Netherlands were allowed to stay.  It now turns out that thousands of them registered under false identities.  One lawyer who represents mainly Chinese formerly illegal immigrants says that 80 to 90% of these immigrants gave false identities.  According to one government lawyer, the majority of those who benefitted from the general amnesty had registered under entirely or partly false identities.

Prime Minister Rutte: It is best if Dutch jihadis are killed in the Middle East

Prime Minister Mark Rutte has said that it would be better for Dutch jihadis to be killed in Syria and Iraq rather than return to the Netherlands.  He said that although this is not government policy, it is appropriate if people are so mentally backward to go there and fight for a bad cause that goes against all Dutch values.  Four opposition parties D-66, the Green Left, SP and the Christian Union were shocked by these statements.
