Drastic Security Measures at Installation Ceremony of Rotterdam Mayor


Since the murder of media maker Theo van Gogh in 2004, Ahmed Aboutaleb, tThe new mayor of Rotterdam, is one of the most heavily guarded politicians in the Netherlands. At his installation as Mayor of Rotterdam a police dog was used to check the bags and equipment of all journalists who came to the ceremony.

Minister of Interior: Next Year We’ll be Tougher with Hooligans


Minister of the Interior Guusje ter Horst (Labor) says that next New Year’s Eve she will deal with hooligans much more severely than this year. She expressed her satisfaction that this New Year’s Eve was better than last year, but the number of incidents was still too high. The police say that New Year’s Eve was “quiet” – there were 800 arrests and almost 3,000 incidents.

Left Wing Politician Calls for Intifada


During an anti-Israel demonstration in Amsterdam, Parliamentarian Harry van Bommel of the extreme left Socialist Party, called for an intifada against Israel. Pictures of him shouting this demand were shown on a website.

Personal Data on Drug Clinic Patients found at Railway Station


Confidential data on drug addicts being treated at the Amsterdam Jellinek clinic were found recently by a traveler at the Amsterdam Sloterdijk railway station. The files included information such as suicidal inclinations and psychotic characteristics.

Over Seven Thousand Fireworks Incidents on New Year’s Eve


The Dutch police registered 7,640 firework incidents on New Year’s Eve. Eight hundred people were arrested for involvement in such incidents. There were 1,370 cases of arson. Ninety-seven public officials were attacked on the holiday. These are only preliminary figures.

Hundreds of Deaths in Intensive Care Departments Could be Prevented


Patients who spend more than two days in intensive care departments are at major risk of contracting infections. If these people were given preventive antibiotics, about 540 deaths could be prevented annually. This is the conclusion of research by Anne Marie de Smet of the Utrecht University Medical Center.

Sixty People Arrested in Amsterdam on New Year’s Eve


Sixty people were arrested in Amsterdam on New Year’s Eve, about twice the number as on a regular Saturday night. Several people were wounded.
