Leiden University Cancels Professorship of Jewish Studies

Judith Frishman has presented her departure lecture as Professor of Jewish Studies at Leiden University. The University is now cancelling that Professorship. She mentioned that she has frequently been asked whether the Jewish community could subsidize the Professorship. Frishman observed that this request is related to the prejudice of the rich Jew, which Dutch Jews are not. She added: “why should Jews pay for this Professorship and why doesn't have a firm place just as other Professorships of other religions have?”

French President accuses Dutch of acting like Brexit Britain

At the EU Corona virus summit, French president Emanuel Macron accused Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte of taking Brexit Britain's obstructive role at EU summits. This happened when the discussions on the  massive Corona virus rescue funds reached a fourth day.  Rutte and his allies have demanded more oversight of payments from the rescue fund and most of the cash to be loans rather than non-repayable grants. Macron said that Mr. Rutte behaved like the former British Prime Minister David Cameron who lost the Brexit referendum and his job.  Mr. Rutte said: We are not here to be invited to each other's birthdays for the rest of our lives."

Dutch Railway Company Heavily Criticized on Holocaust Reparations

During the Second World War, the Dutch National Railway Company, nowadays called NS, transported Jews to Dutch transit camps and from there to the German border.  Almost all, more than a hundred thousand, were murdered.  NS has made payments to survivors and their descendants yet there are many murdered with no descendants. A collective payment should be made for this according to an independent commission.  The NS has decided to make a payment of 5.6 million dollars divided between 4 Dutch memorial centers.  It has refused to sit down with Jewish organizations to discuss the collective payment.  This refusal has received major international publicity partly due to a publication of Associated Press.
