Eritrean Intimidation in the Netherlands

The intimidation of others by adherents of the dictatorial Eritrean regime living in the Netherlands has now spread to include people outside the Eritrean community.  Within the Dutch Eritrean community, there is a culture of fear.  Through its followers in the diaspora, the Eritrean government exercises pressure on Eritreans abroad to support it with money and to silence critics of its policies.  A Dutch scholar, Professor Mirjam van Reissen, has been threatened by Eritreans, together with several others.  She has complained to the police.  Journalist Sanne Terlingen also reports that she has been the target of intimidating tweets.  According to the UN, Eritrea is one of the most unfree governments in the world, and human rights are massively violated.

Who ordered halting investigation of ministry deal with criminal?

Parliament has gone to great effort in obtaining more details regarding the huge amount of money restituted to a known criminal by the Ministry of Justice in 2014.  The deal was concluded by then prosecutor Fred Teeven, who later became Deputy Minister of Justice.  The then Minister of Justice, Ivo Opstelten, said that the payment was 1.25 million guilders.  However, the receipt could not be found.  It has now become known that ministry officials did know where the receipt was in 2014.  The commission of inquiry were told to stop the investigation – it is not clear on whose instructions.  In 2015 it was discovered that the amount in question was in fact 5 million guilders.  The day after this sum was disclosed, both Opstelten and Teeven resigned.  The commission headed by Marten Oosting, which investigated the so-called Teeven deal in the past, has now been asked to re-open its investigation.

At this week’s soccer game in The Hague between the local club ADO and AJAX Amsterdam, there was a repeat of racist sloganeering.  Whenever the black AJAX player Bazoer touched the ball, jungle yells were heard.  This also happened 25 years ago, when black AJAX goalkeeper Stanley Menzo was the target.  In 2011 the club lost a court case concerning anti-Semitic songs during a game.  The ADO club management has distanced itself from the racist incident and said it will investigate to discover the initiators the shouts.

A new Refugee Underclass is being created

Researchers of various government bodies warn that a new underclass of refugees is in the process of being created in Dutch society. In it unemployment and criminality play a major role. The researchers undertook a study of the integration of 33,000 asylum migrants. These arrived in the Netherlands in the 1980s and 1990s and received residence permits. Many of them have been unemployed for a long time. The researchers recommend that the government do much more to help the current asylum migrants to find work, in order to avoid similar problems. Asylum migrants with little education, such as those from Somalia, have the greatest difficulty in finding work.
