Police Commissioner Leen Schaap of the Amsterdam Police said that burglars in the Netherlands get far too light punishment. Schaap said that much effort is invested in catching burglars and then they receive a light sentence which is in no way related to the severity of the crime. In the Amsterdam region in 2010, 6,800 burglaries were reported and 618 burglars were arrested. In particular, the suburb Amstelveen is a preferred target of burglars.
