Marianne Thieme, the faction leader of the Party for Animals in Dutch parliament has said that the Dutch government neglects citizen concerns as it is not holding a referendum on the European Union reforms. She compared this to the dictatorial behavior of the Mugabe government in Zimbabwe. The Dutch population had voted against the European constitution in a 2005 referendum.
