Major riots broke out in the town of Geldermalsen about
plans to build a center for 1,500 asylum seekers. The number of protesters was estimated at
2,000, in a town of 27,000 inhabitants.
A town council meeting which was held to decide on this issue had to be
adjourned as protesters tried to force their way into the building. The police fired warning shots to disperse
the crowd, and announced that they had made a number of arrests. Dozens of youths tore down fences and threw
beer bottles and fireworks at the police.
The deputy Justice Minister Klaas Dijkhoff called the incident “un-Dutch”.
