Over a week before the end of the year, the national hotline
for complaints about fireworks had already received fifteen thousand
notifications. The hotline initiator,
Arnold Bonte, a Green Left party member and Rotterdam municipal councilman,
said this is a substantial increase over last year for the same time period. People are awoken during the night by loud
firework explosions, which also create stress for domestic animals. Most of the complaints came from Rotterdam
and The Hague.
