Angry Farmers Blocks Site of Provincial Government

Fifteen farmers have blockaded the entrance to the building of the Flevoland Province government in Lelystad. The province wants to create a new nature reserve for which farms will have to be abandoned. The province also decided – secretly – that people who live in that area will now have to present building plans not only to the municipality but also to the province.

Sociologist Researching Violence against Homosexuals Beaten

Sociologist Laurens Buijs is doing research on behalf of the Amsterdam municipality on the subject of increasing violence against homosexuals. One of his preliminary conclusions is that, among the perpetrators are not only non-Western immigrants but also autochtonous Dutch. There was further proof of this a few days ago when Buijs was beaten up in the center of the city by about 10 Dutch fans of the Ajax football team, after they first called him a “dirty homosexual.”

Amsterdam Airport Expects Decline in Business Due to Environmental Tax

From this week people traveling from Dutch airports will have to pay an environmental tax of 45 Euro for intercontinental flights, and 11.25 Euro for flights within Europe. One cheap airline, the British EasyJet is decreasing its flights to and from Amsterdam and rerouting them to Brussels. It expects to transport 200,000 passengers less from Amsterdam airport in July and August – a decline of 15%.

Dutch Railways Abolish Toilets in Many Trains

The Dutch Railways plan to reduce the number of toilets in the trains, and many won’t have toilets at all. In addition ProRail, the railway infrastructure company, intends to build a number of new stations with no toilet facilities. Consumer organizations have protested, but with no success.

Excrement Terrorist Active in Eindhoven

For the last six months residents of a neighborhood in the town of Eindhoven have regularly been finding little packages containing excrement. The municipality says that it received the first complaint only on 13 June and is investigating the matter.

Serb Republic to Take Netherlands to Court

The Republika Srpska (RS), one of the two entities which make up Bosnia, will take the Netherlands to court. Its Prime Minister Milorad Dodik claims that the Dutch UN troops have not protected the inhabitants of the Serb villages in the neighborhood of Srebrenica against attacks by Bosnian Muslims. He said that in the Bosnian civil war between 1992 and 1995, thousands of Serbs were killed by Muslims in that area. The attackers came from the zone supposedly being protected by the Dutch UN troops. The Netherlands had already earlier been taken to court by organizations of family members of Bosnian Muslims who were murdered in Srebrenica by Bosnian Serb troops.

Attorney-General can Prosecute Amsterdam Municipality in Hazardous Waste Case

An Amsterdam judge has decided that the Attorney-General can prosecute the Amsterdam Municipality in regard to the ship Probo Koala. In 2006 the municipality authorized the ship to leave the harbor although it probably had hazardous waste on board. A month later the ship, on the order of the Trafigura oil company, transferred the material to a waste treatment company in the Ivory Coast. The latter probably dumped it in Abidjan, where 16 people died and tens of thousands became ill.
