In an inquiry
in which 211 Dutch mayors – more than half the total number of the country's mayors – participated, it was found
that forty-one of them suffer from verbal or physical violence several times a year. A
few are assaulted several times a month. In thirty-four municipalities, criminals influence
the functioning of the municipality.
